"Forest Bathing" at New Canaan Nature Center

“New research suggests that our connection to nature is much more important to our cognition than we think and that even small amounts of exposure to the living world can improve our creativity and enhance our mood.” Florence Williams, The Nature Fix.

The Japanese practice of shinrin-yuko, which translates to ‘forest bathing’, is the medicine of simply being in the forest. It is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness. The purpose is to slow down and become immersed in the natural environment. The mental and physical health benefits include reducing stress and fostering relaxation, boosting the immune system, increasing energy, and decreasing anxiety, depression and anger.

With the glow of summer upon us, we hope you will join us to explore the practice of forest bathing. We’ll learn about the practice and then take an experiential walk outside, inspiring us to tune into our surroundings by using all of our senses - the smells, textures, tastes and sights of our natural world.

Where: New Canaan Nature Center 124 Oenoke Ridge Road, New Canaan
We'll meet in the parking lot prior to 9:30 AM
What: An explanation of Forest "Bathing", then an invitation to use the grounds to practice it. There will be a period of sitting, as well as movement around the property. Please bring a chair or cushion that you can sit on the grass with.

We hope that you can join us for our One Day Silent Retreat. Spending time in community, observing noble silence offers a restorative, uplifting, nourishing experience; one that can deepen our practice and help us become more familiar with and kind toward ourselves. Over the course of the day, we will engage in a variety of secular guided and silent mind-focusing and heart-opening practices. At the end of the day, we will exit silence, and celebrate the time we have taken to care for ourselves and, by extension, others. No meditation experience is necessary, but we do invite you to join us for our regular weekly sits.

Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided. Please bring your own lunch. We recommend wearing comfortable clothes and bringing a mat and cushion, but it is not required – we will have some to borrow.

Interested in learning how to listen so that you hear all of what someone wants to share with you?  Want to learn how to speak so that you are more fully understood? Come join Community Mindfulness Project for a Mindful Listening + Speaking workshop.  You’ll leave this hands-on session with information, tips and strategies for communicating more mindfully, whether you’re discussing everyday topics or issues that are more charged and where you have differing opinions. This session will build off of the ML+S workshop offered at the New Canaan Library in September and is also appropriate for people who didn’t attend that one.

The Ferguson Library will be closed today, Tuesday February 12th, due to the snow storm.  We will miss sitting in community with you, but we invite you to join us virtually....

Pausing wherever you are at 1PM....

Either lying down on your back or seated in a chair
Bringing bare attention down into the left big toe with a sense of objective curiosity
Noticing all the sensations that arise outside the body in that area
Noticing all the sensations that arise inside the body in that area
Acknowledge only those that you actually feel, not what you think you should feel or might feel,
nor what might or might not be causing the sensations that you notice
If no sensations are present in certain parts of the body, noticing that, too
Moving your attention inch by inch up through the body, listening with care to what the body has to tell you
When the mind wanders, smiling, and gently but warmly directing the attention back to sensations in the body

May all beings everywhere without exception benefit from listening to their bodies as they would a dear friend.

We are thrilled to partner with the New Canaan Pop Up Park Committee to offer Morning Meditations in New Canaan's beautiful pop up park at the corner of Elm Street and South Avenue.  Please join us Thursday mornings at 7:00 AM for guided meditations through Labor Day, weather permitting.  You may wish to bring a towel or cushion for the chair.  We will begin with some context about the day's practice, then share a guided meditation for 30 minutes, and wrap up with an optional sharing of observations and questions.
