Summer Skills for All Year Long

Recently a few of the CMP founders have started surfing. It turns out that, like almost any physical activity, surfing requires some of the traits we practice in meditation. Concentration, a keen sense of the body, a  beginner's mind attitude, moment-to-moment nonjudgmental awareness-all these sensibilities lead to the core requirement of surfing.

Balance!

It's the foundational skill needed to stand up on a surfboard and navigate the rapidly changing conditions of water and wave.

Surfing is a great metaphor for life. Aren't we all responding to the arisings of this moment? Isn't every moment different? Instants of joy and sadness, elation, frustration, confidence and doubt, weakness, strength, success and failure. These shifting senses are the waves of our lives, coming continuously, unstoppable.

How can we deal with these waves in a way where we can greet the next second, poised and engaged, ready for whatever comes our way?

Find out at this week’s practice! Equanimity toward everything.
